Introduction
This Omega One Veggie Rounds review is written from a hobbyist perspective after personally testing the food.
Omega One Veggie Rounds is Omega One’s version of the classic algae wafer. While it fits most of the boxes of an algae wafer, I found that it doesn’t quite live up to my expectations. While I may not like it, my review below will hopefully help you decide whether this is the right food for your fish.
Are my fish a fan of the food?
Yes and no. Some of my fish seem to like the food a little. However, I would say that they enjoy my other algae wafers noticeably more like Hikari’s Algae Wafers to name one. It’s just one of those foods that doesn’t seem to create much excitement in the tank when added. This includes my bristlenose pleco and other fish like my platys.
Package Sizing and Pricing
Omega One Veggie Rounds come in four sizes. A 2 oz, 4 oz, 8 oz, and a 15 lb. container. Lots of sizes for lots of situations. The cost will run you about $10 for a 4 oz jar on Amazon. That is about $2.50 an ounce. I should mention that the price can vary fairly widely depending on deals and sizes. But overall, I think this is a fair to relatively inexpensive price for the ingredients included.
Wafer Overview
I find the wafers to be slightly smaller than some other popular brands on the market which is fine. But these wafers really aggravate me for one major reason, they don’t like to sink. I have found that far too many of the wafers that I place in the tank float around before sinking. This can be very aggravating when trying to place the food in a particular spot to watch your fish feed.
Ingredient Quality
Omega One Veggie Rounds follow the same formula that many other algae wafers do by not having much algae in them. In fact, the first “veggie” you will find is six ingredients down the list with dried kelp. The next would be pea protein and spirulina at the eight and ten spots. These ingredients aren’t exactly uncommon in other standard fish foods that aren’t specifically labeled “veggie”.
I don’t want you to think that I hate the food for simply not advertising accurately. The reality is that many brands do the same thing. I just wish they would change their marketing tactics.
After talking so negatively, let me share the positives regarding ingredients. Omega One uses salmon and whole herring as their primary protein sources. They also have an assortment of vitamins and minerals to round the food out. Not bad in my opinion, if the fish will eat it.
Market Availability
Omega One fish foods are found at most pet shops in the US as well as online. If you search around you can often find deals as well.
Side Note: Petco will price match their website which seems to often be running deals regularly.
My Final Thoughts
Honestly, I just wouldn’t bother with this food unless you are low on options. In my opinion, Hikari Algae Wafers are simply a superior product. Fluval Algae Crisps are also superior in my opinion.
As much as I would like to like Omega One fish foods, the majority seem to disappoint me. This food does not excite my fish and the wafer not sinking annoys me. But the ingredients aren’t half bad, and maybe your fish will love these. For me, however, I’ll pass.
