In Depth Review

Note: This Sera Spirulina O-Nip Tabs review is from my own personal use of the food as an aquarium hobbyist.

I have enjoyed using the classic Sera O-Nip Tabs over the years, but it wasn’t until recently that I noticed the spirulina version of the food. I like spirulina, and it seems like a good idea to branch off of a food that is working, but does this one measure up to the classic? I hope to cover my thoughts on the food in my review below.

Update: It looks like they have updated the food recently, but the changes appear minor.

Are my fish a fan of the food?

This one is a little difficult to answer because I have had fish that seem to enjoy it as much as the community version of the food, and I have a 75-gallon community tank that hardly touches it. This includes a variety of tetras, some angelfish, some corydoras, some snails, and a bristlenose pleco. I also tried the food with my shrimp and platys, which I thought would enjoy it more. However, I found them to also not be very excited about the food. My guppies, however, seemed to enjoy this well enough.

Another layer that makes this more difficult to rate is the fact that it is targeted primarily towards herbivorous fish. At this time, I wouldn’t say that any of my fish are heavily herbivorous. However, I would assume many like the platies, and my pleco would appreciate this food mixed into their diet.

Package Sizing and Pricing

Sera O Nip Tabs come in multiple sizes, from a small 24-pack to a small jar to a 3lb tub. The small pack will cost you around $7. If you consider using one a day, with the small pack, it would be a little under a month’s worth of food for one tank for $7. Not cheap but not too expensive either.

I could give a shout-out to Sera’s packing for the smaller pack, as each is individually sealed, which I consider a benefit for keeping the food fresh longer.

Tablet Overview

These tablets stick really well to the glass, which makes for a fun way to feed your fish for sure. They may even stay on the glass better than the classic version of the food, from what I’ve found. The sizing is the same as the original, which can be good or bad depending on how many fish you need to feed in a tank.

You could use this as a sinking pellet, but the food breaks down into almost a powder, so I would not typically recommend it.

So these tabs are very similar to the other Sera tabs in form, size, and function, but this one is green. Wow! Amazing insights as always. You’re welcome.

Ingredient Quality

The ingredients are definitely a positive for the food in my opinion, as they include what they advertise. A heavy percentage of plant-based ingredients start the list with spirulina (24%), of course, and sea algae (16%) as the second. The next few ingredients are fish meal and krill meal (9%), followed by a variety of different and interesting ingredients, including egg powder and green-lipped mussel.

The protein level on this food is also a little lower than most foods on the market, at 39%, which is generally considered good for those looking to feed herbivorous fish.

I really want to thank Sera for including the percentage of some of the ingredients that they use in their foods. I wish more companies did the same thing.

Market Availability

Sera Spirulina O Nip Tabs are not too difficult to find in my opinion, as I was able to find some at a Petco near me, and I can readily find them online.

My Final Thoughts

This is a hard one for me to summarize because I have mixed opinions. I love the tabs sticking to the glass for feeding, and I like the ingredients that they use. I also like the food as a random one to mix into the diet of those fish that will eat it. But that is the issue: will they eat it?

So my recommendation is very wishy-washy.

This food may be for you if you have some fish that want a herbivorous diet and if they will eat it, but unfortunately, I don’t know if that will be the case.
