Introduction
This review of Fluval Bug Bites Shrimp Formula is from my personal use of the product and is written from a hobbyist perspective.
Ever wish that Fluval would take their shrimp granules and make it into a Bug Bite formula? Your wish has been granted! Fluval recently started making another shrimp food with a “Bug Bites” formula, and honestly, I don’t think I notice much difference. My following review will cover what I like and don’t like about the food.
Do Shrimp Like the Food?
Yes, my shrimp eat the food. Do they love the food? It is hard to tell with shrimp in my opinion. Being scavengers, shrimp jump on just about any shrimp or fish food you put in the tank. Their response will also depend on how full they are from the biofilm and other goodies they can find in the tank.
Package Sizing and Pricing
Fluval’s Shrimp Formula comes in one container, weighing about 1.06oz or 30 grams. The cost is relatively inexpensive, at about $4 per bottle. This amount should last you a while depending on how many shrimp you have.
Pellet Overview
Fluval considers this food form to be a “micro granule”. This means that most granules should be under .14 cm. The small size makes it convenient for shrimp to take and carry away. This is fine with a small group of shrimp but can be difficult when feeding a colony. I have run into the same problem with other shrimp foods like Hikari Shrimp Cuisine. Another negative with the smaller granules is that they can easily fall into the cracks of your substrate depending on what you have.
One last thing to note about the granules is that they don’t sink consistently. Some will sink quickly but I find that some float for quite a while. It can be fun to watch the shrimp try to grab them off the surface but floating food is not ideal when feeding shrimp.
Ingredient Quality
I like the ingredients contained in Fluval Bug Bites Shrimp Formula. The primary ingredients are black soldier fly larvae, followed by salmon. This is somewhat surprising since the food has a lower protein level. It also contains peas and potatoes which I find interesting. Minerals and vitamins are added to round the food out.
Also of note is the copper. While some hobbyists worry about copper with their shrimp, and rightfully so. Copper is necessary in very small amounts for shrimp health. Here is a link to someone who dives deeper into the topic if you want to learn more. Aquarium Breeder: Copper Article
Packaging
Perhaps my favorite thing about this food is the bottle it comes in. At first, I was quite curious about the packaging and thought it would be a pain to feed. However, I discovered that it makes feeding quick and easy. The small granules are a good shape for the hole on the bottle and seem to be fairly consistent when dispensing. If you are trying to be specific with the number of granules you feed, it is not too hard to only have a few come out.
Market Availability
Fluval foods are easy to find in the US. With shrimp’s growing popularity, I also find the shrimp formula fairly widespread. You should be able to find the food at most pet shops and online.
My Final Thoughts
Fluval Bug Bites Shrimp Formula is a solid food for those looking to feed a few shrimp, or to help round out their shrimp’s diet. I am not a fan of those looking to feed a large colony, but it could still work depending on how you do things. The ingredients are good, the price is good, and the bottle is pretty cool. In conclusion, I give this food a “not amazing but good” rating.
