Introduction
This review of New Life Spectrum Betta Pellets (Small) is from my personal use of the product and is written from a hobbyist perspective.
I have had bettas throughout almost the entirety of my time in the aquarium hobby. They are an incredibly popular fish. They easily win people over with their vibrant personalities and beautiful colors. Companies know about their widespread popularity and have tried to capitalize with tons of betta products on the market including countless foods.
I have tried a fair number of betta foods over the years and New Life Spectrum Pellets is one of the most recent I have given a go. After using it relatively briefly, I have concluded that it is now one of my favorites. My review below will hopefully explain why.
Do Fish Like the Food?
This is an easy one for most betta foods honestly. In my opinion, most bettas will eat just about anything that floats on the water’s surface. New Life Spectrum pellets are no exception. My red veil-tail betta (Balky) will readily eat the pellets with fervor at the surface of the water. The only time I have noted him passing on food is after it sinks. Even then he will sometimes give it a try.
Package Sizing and Pricing
New Life Spectrum Betta Pellets come in one size, the .8oz container, costing about $9 or roughly $10 an oz. When it comes to pricing betta foods, I find it hard to label anything as expensive. The reality is that most foods will last you a very long time depending on how many bettas you have. However, when compared to other betta foods I find it to be around the middle of the pack, or a little more expensive.
Pellet Overview
The small version of the New Life Spectrum Betta Pellet is very tiny, as you can see in the picture to the right where I have some sitting next to a dime. The pellets are also semi-floating which means that they float for a little while and then slowly sink.
I have personally found that the pellets stay floating for a fair amount of time to give my betta a chance to eat. I also have found that I really like the smaller pellet size. Over the years I have used some pellets that are too large and the bettas can have difficulty eating them. If you have a smaller betta, I would highly recommend the smaller-size pellets.
Ingredient Quality
New Life Spectrum foods are known for having quality ingredients in them. From my understanding, this is why the prices are a bit higher than some of their competitors.
The betta pellets come with a few ingredients that I personally like to see. The first ingredient is one that New Life Spectrum is known for, their whole arctic krill. This is a great protein source for fish and can help with coloration in some fish.
Some other ingredients that I appreciate are the whole menhaden fish and the garlic. Garlic is primarily an incentive for fish to eat the food but it seems to work well. The food also has the standard vitamins and binders added to round out the food.
Market Availability
New Life Spectrum Betta Pellets seem to be available in most pet shops in the US. I was able to buy mine from Petco. You should also be able to readily buy the food online. Amazon is a decent source for most people. I will have an affiliate link below if you would like to buy some from them.
My Final Verdict
I like New Life Spectrum’s Betta Pellets. I really appreciate the smaller pellet size (Note there is a regular-size pellet that appears to have the same ingredients.) and the quality ingredients. My betta likes the food and I have even fed it to some of my other fish.
I would recommend the food for those with any betta, but especially those who have smaller ones. One container should last you a long time if you only have one or two bettas.
Are they the best betta pellets on the market? I will leave that for you to decide.
