In Depth Overview

Omega One Freshwater Flakes .42oz

When you search for a list of the best fish foods available, chances are that Omega One pops up in the lists. I had seen this myself recently and realized that I had never tried some for myself that I could remember. So, I picked some up, and well… I have some mixed feelings about the food.

This Omega One Freshwater Flakes review is from my personal experience as an aquarium hobbyist, and my personal use of the product.

Do Fish Like the Food?

The food starts on good grounds with my fish enjoying the food thoroughly. At the first feeding, all of my fish readily accepted the food and didn’t seem to have any problems getting it down, with one exception (see below). I have fed a lot of different flakes over the years, and they are not always accepted readily. This is a win for the food.

Package Sizing and Pricing

Again, I would say that this is a positive point for the food. It is currently priced at about $9 for a 2.2oz container on Amazon, which is about $4 an ounce. Compared to a top competitor TetraMin, they are a little more expensive, but compared to another big competitor, Hikari, they are a bit cheaper. Overall, I would place them in the mid-price range, and considering the ingredients, this seems like a fair price.

A random thing to note in the price category is that the Omega One Freshwater Flakes also come in some absurd sizes. The sizes include the .42oz, the 1oz, the 2.2oz, the 5.3oz, the 12oz, and the crazy 5lb bucket. If you have enough fish for the 5lb bucket, please comment below on what you have. #trueaquariumhobbyist

Flake Overview

Here is my one major gripe about the food, the flake quality. Maybe it just happened to be the one container I bought, but these flakes were rough. As you can see in the picture, the container had a decent number of flakes that were really hard and clumpy. These even seemed worse than API’s flakes which is on my “not a fan list” for a similar reason. This problem appeared to cause some of my fish to have a hard time eating the food. The large, hard flakes, only seemed edible after soaking and sinking.

Ingredient Quality

Following that negative is perhaps the biggest perk to the Omega One Freshwater Flakes. The food uses some quality ingredients. It contains whole salmon and whole herring as the first two ingredients on the list. These are some quality protein sources, and knowing that they are the most prevalent ingredients in the food is great. Also knowing that they are not a cheap fish meal is helpful and gives an extra reason to spend a little more on the food.

The food also has a few binders to hold the food together and vitamins to provide a well-balanced diet. I will note, however, that the list is much smaller than some competitors. This is probably because of the quality of the protein sources in the food.

Where to Buy Omega One Freshwater Flakes

You can find Omega One Freshwater Flakes in most aquarium shops or chain pet shops like Petco. The food is also readily available online. I will have a link listed below if you would like to try the food for yourself.

My Final Thoughts

This is a tough review for me to summarize. I really do like the food, but I find it hard to overcome the quality control problems with the flakes.

However, the truth is, my fish enjoy the food and the price is good for the ingredients you get. In the end, I would recommend trying this food, if you don’t mind picking through a few bad flakes and clumps.
