In Depth Overview

Repashy Grub Pie has been my first dive into the Repashy fish food brand, and I have to say that I really like it. They have a bunch of options out there and I will hopefully review some more in the future. Today however, I figured I would let you know about the Grub Pie variety.

This review of the Repashy Grub Pie fish food is from my personal experience as an aquarium hobbyist.

Repashy Grub Pie Review

Do Fish Like the Food?

Yes, my fish like the food. However, it is important to note that not all fish eat every Repashy food. One of the things that sets Repashy apart from other fish food brands is that they have nine different types of food, each with a unique niche they are targeting. For instance, they have a food specifically for plecos that has wood in it.

The Grub Pie formula is targeted for fish that would primarily be eating insects in the wild. My guppies are a good example of a fish that this food is good for.

Another factor to consider is that Repashy food sinks in the water. This means that fish who prefer eating from the surface will generally not be interested. There is a work around on this problem for small fish though. You can simply add the powder directly into the tank. The powder floats for a long time and can be picked at on the surface.

Why Gel Food?

Repashy’s gel food is truly a unique style of food to feed. While it has a few downsides it also has many great benefits. I figured I would give a list of the negatives and positives below.

Negatives

  • Sinks When Gelatinized
  • Takes Time to Make

Positives

  • Remains Stable in Water for a Long Time
  • Allows Fish to Graze for Hours
  • High Moisture Content is Great for Fish Digestion
  • Can be Coated on Random Items like Rocks for Fish to Graze On
  • Allows for Medicine and Vitamins to be Added in the Gel Easily
  • Can Mix Other Foods in the Gel, Like Flake Foods or Pellets

As you can see, there are a lot more positives than negatives for using gel food, in my opinion.

Making the Gel

Perhaps the biggest complaint you will hear about Repashy is the process of making the gel. The reality is that it is an extra step to feeding your fish, but it also is pretty easy.

The food comes in a powder, and you will need to mix it with boiling water. The mix is about one part powder to two parts water. After you mix it in thoroughly, you will simply let it set for a few minutes to set. That’s it.

After creating the gel, you will want to store it in your fridge or freezer. I personally use a small container with a lid that I place in my fridge.

Package Sizing and Pricing

I would consider Repashy to be a relatively expensive fish food. A 6oz jar will run you $15.99. You do get a great food with great ingredients, for the price. However, it’s important to note that Repashy also comes with a very short shelf life compared to most foods. Repashy Grub Pie, for example, is only good in the fridge for about two weeks and about six months in the freezer. Because of this I would recommend getting smaller containers for those with just a few tanks. This will allow you to use it within the timeframe needed. I would also note that while this is a best practice, I still used it after the expiration date.

One nice thing about Repashy’s pricing is that they have a set minimum market price for all stores that sell them. So, whether you buy it from your local shop or from Repashy themselves, you should pay the same price. They don’t allow undercutting from big shops like Amazon or others, but some will charge a little more. This seems to primarily help small businesses who can’t compete with box store prices.

Ingredient Quality

Repashy really stands out with their ingredient selections. They strive to pick ingredients that make sense for the fish they are targeting. Since Grub Pie is targeting insect eating fish, the food has black soldier fly larvae meal as its primary ingredient.

The food also contains ingredients like coconut, dried watermelon, and a few flowers that you won’t find in most other fish foods. Since most fish would be grazing on random plants that fall into the water, this helps to balance the diet.

Where to Buy Repashy Grub Pie

Repashy fish foods are often not found at big box stores but can be found at a good amount of specialty pet shops. They are also readily available online from most online retailers including Repashy themselves. I will have a link below to buy some from Amazon if you would like.

My Final Thoughts

In conclusion, Repashy Grub Pie is a great food to give a try if you haven’t yet.

I enjoy Repashy foods because my fish enjoy it, I trust the ingredients, its unique gel form allows for a lot of creative ways to feed your fish, and lastly, it’s great to throw in a tank for a long time without having to worry about it polluting your tank quickly.
