In Depth Overview

This Aquarium Coop Magic Nano Feed review is written from a hobbyist perspective after personally testing the food.

If I am being honest, I am a fan of the Aquarium Coop brand in general. I have been watching their YouTube channel for years and have purchased from them a few times in the past. I like what they are doing for the hobby. That said, I believe I can honestly review the food without much bias and will attempt to do so below.

Do Fish Like the Food?

This is always the place to start when testing a food, and it is a definite yes for me. I noticed that just about all of my fish express a lot of interest in the food. In particular, the smaller fish. I enjoy watching my guppies go into a feeding frenzy when the food starts to float down. If you ever watch guppies eat live baby brine shrimp excitedly, they kind of “peck” the water column viciously to get the tiny morsels.  This food seems to create a similar effect.

Package Sizing and Pricing

Aquarium Coop Magic Nano Feed currently only comes in one size, a 4oz jar. The jar costs exactly $11.99 on their website.

While I wouldn’t call this cheap food, it is certainly not overpriced. At about $3 an ounce, it puts the food as a cheaper option than something like Hikari Micro Pellets. It still may seem pricey at $12, but keep in mind that you are getting a lot of food at that price. I believe the cost is worth it for what you get with the ingredients.

Side note: The seal was tough to get off the jar.

Side Side Note: This food could really use a small spoon for feeding.

"Magic Nano Feed" Overview

Are these pellets? Not really. Is it a fry food? Kind of. Honestly, it is a difficult food to categorize. This is probably why the name is just “Magic Nano Feed”. I will attempt to describe what it is a little better below.

The food is about 200 microns or .2mm small, which means that this food is primarily geared towards smaller nano fish, or fish fry. The food floats and slowly sinks as you can see in the video above. The “magic” part of the food is the way that it floats in the water column after sinking. It seems to keep a level of buoyancy that allows for it to be carried by the current in the aquarium.

This is something that I have not found in testing other fish foods so far, and I have to say, it’s amazing. I really like how it doesn’t just fall into the substrate quickly and how it seems to create excitement with the fish eating it. In my opinion, it is pretty “magical”.

Ingredient Quality

Aquarium Coop Magic Nano Feed uses whole krill meal, whole anchovy meal, and whole shrimp meal as its primary ingredients. This is followed by wheat flour as a binder, fish oil, yeast, and then a bunch of vitamins and minerals to help round out the food.

I think the ingredients are solid. It’s nice to know that whole fish meal is being used instead of some “cheaper” fish meals that only use parts of the fish. I also really like the whole krill which can help with red coloration in fish. The food also has a high protein level of 55%. This is especially nice for growing fish and for helping pregnant fish produce more young.

Market Availability

Unfortunately, this food is only available through the Aquarium Coop website or one of their growing lists of partner stores. This isn’t the end of the world for the food, but it does make it a little harder to find than some others on the market.

My Final Thoughts

I can sum this food up very easily. If you have guppies, other small nano fish, or fry, just buy some. It really is that good in my opinion.

On a longer note, the ingredients are solid, the way it appears like baby brine shrimp in the water column is amazing, and the fish seem to love it. With that said, I would recommend having some current in your tank to help with circulating the food and you may want to use something like a tiny spoon for feeding. If you are feeding larger fish then this is probably not the food for you simply because of the size of the food. Otherwise, I believe this is a solid food choice for most aquarists.
