Introduction
This review of Fluval Bug Bites Betta Formula is from my personal use of the product and is written from a hobbyist perspective.
Fluval has been coming out with a lot of foods over the last few years. Specifically, their Bug Bites line of foods. In general, I have been enjoying them, but how does the betta formula stack up compared to the competition and their other foods? This review will strive to cover the needed information to help you decide whether or not to try this food for yourself.

Do Fish Like the Food?
My current betta, Cousin Larry, has been enjoying this food thoroughly. It seems to be one of his favorites. Will this always be the case for all bettas? Probably not. But it’s a good place to start? Yes.
Package Sizing and Pricing
This food only comes in one size currently, a 1.05oz bottle. In my opinion, this is a good size for someone with only a few bettas, as it should last you a fair amount of time without going bad. On the other hand, the cost is currently varying quite a bit depending on where you are buying from. On Amazon it is currently listed at about $10 which is pretty steep. However, if you have a shop nearby or you see a deal, you should be able to get it a fair bit cheaper than this. That is why I have it listed as a “Fair” price above.

Granule Overview
As with granules, they are not very uniform in their sizing. As you can see in the picture, some of the granules are larger and some are smaller. I have not run into any issues with my current betta fish eating them. However, if you have a smaller betta you may run into issues with some of the sizing. I will note that the granules are soft enough that you should be able to break them down without too much trouble if needed.
Something also to note about the granules is that they sink after floating for a little bit. This isn’t ideal for bettas but seems to float long enough that they are not an issue.
Ingredient Quality
The ingredients may be the best part of the Fluval Bug Bites Betta Formula. Since bugs are a bettas’ primary food source in the wild, the insect formula seems like a strong option as their primary protein source to me. The food also contains salmon and fish protein concentrate. Vitamins and minerals are added to help round the food out.

The Packaging
The bottle is a unique way to feed your betta fish and is something that Fluval has also used with their shrimp food. I personally enjoy any feeding method that helps with portioning and feeding without using my fingers. Unfortunately, I find the bottle to be a bit difficult to measure the number of granules that I feed. But it’s still better than just pouring from a jar and arguably is still better than using my fingers.
Market Availability
Fluval Bug Bites are hard to not find at most pet shops in the US. The betta formula may be slightly more difficult to find in person, but is still not too difficult. The food is also readily available online.
Fluval Bug Bites Betta Formula vs. Tropical Formula
Here is a quick question that may come up when shopping for this food. What is the difference between the betta and tropical formula? Honestly, there appears to be very little difference between the two. The granules are the same size and most of the ingredients are the same. The two key differences I see are that the tropical formula has green peas in it and the betta formula has a 5% higher protein level. Otherwise, there is the bottle for the betta formula and the price is probably going to be better per ounce on the tropical formula.
My Final Thoughts
My betta fish likes the food, and I like the food. It’s a win-win situation. The only complaint I have about the food is that the granule sizes vary and they don’t float for a very long time. It’s not a deal breaker but is something to note if you have a smaller betta.
