Introduction
This Hikari Fancy Guppy food review is written from a hobbyist perspective after personally testing the food.
A food specifically designed for one fish type is an interesting idea. But out of all the fish that a specific food could be made for, guppies and livebearers seem like a solid choice due to their popularity.
This review will primarily be from the perspective of feeding guppies, but I will mention some other fish that seem to enjoy it as well. I will cover what I found to be both the positives and negatives of the food.
Do Fish Like the Food?
My guppies definitely like this food. In fact, it may be one of their current favorites. I also feed it to some of my various platys who also like it. Overall, a very popular food amongst my livebearers.
Package Sizing and Pricing
Hikari Fancy Guppy actually comes in two sizes. However, you will probably only see and need the smaller size. The smaller bag is .77 oz. and will cost you about $7 on Amazon. If you can find it in your local store you may be able to find it at a better price. Some other websites could also be cheaper, but you will need to factor in shipping. The other size is the 2.2lb bag which could cost you about $145 on eBay. I did not see it for sale elsewhere.
The smaller bag is just like the other Hikari foods that come in the same resealable bag. They are pretty handy and seem to keep the food well.
Granule Overview
Despite being a granule and not a pellet, I find these to be fairly uniform in their size. The granules are very small, but they aren’t too small for adult guppies. In my opinion, they are an excellent size for guppies and a bite-size for most other livebearers. This is not necessarily a bad thing but it may be something to consider for those with larger fish.
The one minor aspect of this food that I don’t appreciate, is the fact that the food is semi-floating. This food can sink pretty fast and get stuck down in your gravel if your fish can’t get to it fast enough. However, it does seem to float long enough for the fish to get most of it, depending on how many fish you have and how much you feed at once.
Ingredient Quality
Hikari seems to always do a solid job with the ingredients in their foods. Fancy Guppy comes with the classic fish meal as its primary protein source and also uses a krill meal as a protein source. It also comes with binders and vitamins to help round it out.
One particular nutrition fact that I would like to highlight about this food, is the fact that it has a high protein level of 50%. The reason I like this for guppies and other livebearers is that fact that it helps the females with developing baby fish.
Market Availability
Hikari foods are widely available online and in stores. However, I find the Fancy Guppy food to not be as easy to find in stores as some of their other products like algae wafers which are available practically everywhere.
My Final Thoughts
At this point, I have tried about 40 different fish foods, and I have honestly found myself becoming a bit of a fanboy of Hikari’s fish foods. The foods are generally a good balance of quality and price. I believe Hikari Fancy Guppy food to be an excellent choice for feeding guppies and other livebearers like platys or endlers.
If you have a bunch of fish to feed and are looking for something cheaper, there are other options out there. But if you only have a tank or two of livebearers, this could be a great option to give a try.
