Introduction
This TetraColor Tropical Granules review is written from a hobbyist perspective after personally testing the food.
Tetra is perhaps the biggest aquarium company today in the freshwater fish food game. And this is one of their better-selling foods they are currently selling on Amazon. Should it be though? Is it really any good? This review will hope to cover my thoughts on the food and whether it’s a food I would recommend.

Do Fish Like the Food?
Yes, my fish seem to like the food. I would hesitate to say they love it, though. In fact, one of my angelfish is fairly snobby about it and doesn’t pay it much attention. But overall, it is accepted by most of my fish.

Package Sizing and Pricing
This food comes in three different sizes, including a 1.06oz, a 2.65oz and a 10.58oz container. Interestingly enough, both of the larger sizes are about the same price on Amazon currently, at about $7 a container. This is a ridiculously low price for fish food. In fact, I am unsure if there are any name-brand foods out there that come close.
Granule Overview
Don’t let the name of these granules fool you. They are not what I would consider XL. But if you were to read their description of the food on their website, I would say they are ok for the fish size they are talking about. These include larger community fish, like angelfish. But I find these to maybe be a hair bigger than other standard granules on the market.
One downside with these granules is that they are difficult to break down. I have personally been using a pepper grinder to break the food down for my smaller fish. This works, but it is nice to be able to use your fingers to grind it up if needed for smaller fish.

Ingredient Quality
When a food is this cheap, I definitely have questions about the food’s quality. In this case, it appears to contain a decent number of what I would consider cheap ingredients. After the standard fish meal as the number one ingredient, you will find six different plant-based ingredients, including feeding oat meal and wheat flour. Not exactly food that would be found in the wild.
While this food can work for your fish, I find that cheaper foods tend to produce more waste and can foul the water more easily.
Market Availability
One major benefit to buying Tetra-branded foods is that they are available just about anywhere. The flakes seem to be a little more common than the XL granules, however. I bought mine on Amazon.
My Final Thoughts
This food falls into a category I would call “The Cheap Foods”. Notice I didn’t say bad. I think if you are looking to feed a bunch of fish on the cheap and you don’t mind extra tank cleaning, this food will probably work for you. I would, however, recommend feeding a variety of foods to help balance out the fish’s diets.
