Introduction
This review of NorthFin Super Betta Food is from my personal use of the product and is written from a hobbyist perspective.
NorthFin seems to be considered one of the higher-quality fish foods currently available on the market, but how do the Super Betta Bits stack up? The following review will hope to cover some of the pros and cons that I found with the food.
Special Note: This is not a review of NorthFin’s standard Betta Bits. This is for the Super Betta Bits.
Do Fish Like the Food?
My betta spit this food out the first time trying it and continued to spit it out for a while after. He currently will eat it, but will often spit it out and then eat it again. So my answer is no; he does not seem to like it, but he will eat it. I have even reintroduced it after feeding other foods with a similar response.
Package Sizing and Pricing
NorthFin Super Betta Bits come in one size: a .35oz bag, or 10 grams. This is a good size for most people who will only have a few bettas. The bag is resealable, which helps keep the food fresh, but it is not as convenient as some other forms of feeding, like the Fluval Betta Formula bottle.
Pellet Overview
These pellets float decently well and are a uniform 1mm size. In my opinion, this is a great size for most bettas, but you may want something smaller if you have a baby betta.
Ingredient Quality
NorthFin uses krill as its main ingredient in most of its foods, and this one is no exception. However, they use about 85% whole Arctic krill, which is probably what they mean by “super betta”. The issue I run into with this is the fact that my fish does not seem to like the taste. I have heard that high krill amounts tend not to be as palatable to freshwater fish, and this seems to be the experience I am having as well with high-krill foods. The next few ingredients are wheat flour, organic kelp, spirulina, and garlic. Lots of ingredients I would generally like, and that have various benefits.
Market Availability
I find that Norfin foods are not the easiest to find. This food in particular does not seem to be as available. Perhaps this is due to it being less popular than Northfin’s standard betta food, but not sure. But you can find this on Amazon, so it is available to most people shopping online.
Northfin Super Betta vs. Northfin Betta Bits
After using both of these foods, I have found the ingredients and feeding response to be quite different. For the ingredients, after the krill, you will find that the Betta Bits have whole herring and sardine meal, while the Super Betta formula has wheat flour and kelp. And as far as the fish liking the food, I find them to be like night and day. My betta readily ate the Betta Bites but does not seem to like the Super Betta formula.
My Final Thoughts
My betta does not like this food. And if my betta doesn’t like it, the food won’t do him much good, even though I like the ingredients. In my opinion, the issue is the krill content being too high. If your fish likes the food, then that’s great, but for me, I would much rather use and recommend the Betta Bits formula or another food like the Fluval Betta Formula.
